Kururangi Johnston (Ngāti Porou)

Accompanying tutor for cultural anthropology, Māori immersion and understanding

kururangi“Ko Hikurangi te maunga, ko Waiapu te awa, Ko Ngāti Porou te iwi.
Hikurangi is the mountain, Waiapu the river, Ngāti Porou are the people.”

Kia ora rā.

I am an east coast Māori from the Waiapu district, in particular from the village of Tikitiki. Currently, I work on the Te Reo Māori language teaching team at AUT University. I am completing a Master’s in Māori Development on the ancient oral history of the Te Tai Rāwhiti – East Coast people.

We are delighted to have Kururangi join the team as an accompanying tutor who will travel with a group to share his wonderful knowledge and stories about the culture and people he is passionate about.

“Kururangi accompanying us was one of my favorite parts of this trip. He is extremely knowledgeable about Māori culture and language and presented information in an engaging way, allowing us to learn through lectures, storytelling, and doing our own research. This trip would not have been the same without him”.
