Christchurch is the oldest established city in New Zealand and the largest city in the South Island. Part of its charm is the fact that it is a modern city mixed with heritage, culture and exhilarating activity.
Christchurch lies in Canterbury, near the centre of the east coast of the South Island. Christchurch is stretched out between the Pacific Ocean and the agriculturally rich flatlands of the Canterbury Plans, with the Southern Alps acting as a backdrop. A relaxed city where parks and gardens intertwine with fine Victorian architecture. Venture through the city using the tramway system, which allow you to hop on and off throughout the day.
Christchurch is known as “The Garden City” and is one of the most beautiful cities you will ever visit. The Avon river flows through the centre, and is surrounded by bike ways and park areas to enjoy the setting.
The city is an excellent base for exploring activities within driving range like rafting, hiking, paragliding, ballooning and mountain biking. It is also within a two-hour drive of several good ski fields.
Christchurch is home to the University of Canterbury and Ara Institute of Technology (formerly CPIT). There is also a wide range of excellent high schools and private colleges.
